The Perfect Pose

Updated: Dec 22, 2024

“Strike the Pose” - Madonna

Let’s face it—being in front of the camera can feel a bit like trying to nail your best Beyoncé impression at karaoke night. You know you’ve got the potential to slay, but the nerves can kick in, and suddenly, you’re not sure where to put your hands, how to angle your chin, or if that weird half-smile is working (spoiler: it probably is!).

But don’t worry—I’m here to spill the tea on all the tips and tricks to help you pose like a pro. Whether you’re a seasoned selfie queen or more comfortable behind the scenes, these pointers will have you strutting your stuff with confidence and maybe even having a little fun along the way. Because let’s be real, the best photos happen when you’re relaxed, laughing, and owning your fabulous self. Ready to turn awkward into awesome? Let’s get started!

To Begin With, Just RELAX!

Trying to look too perfect in photos can make you look stiff and unnatural. Take a deep breath, relax your shoulders and think happy thoughts!

If you’re feeling stiff, make it more dynamic by adding some movement, such as dancing or walking. You can even try twirling your skirt or waving your scarf or hat in the air.

If you’re feeling awkward, try laughing for real. Think of a joke, a funny moment... it will make you look more natural and relaxed in your photos.

Practice Makes Perfect

We all have a more photogenic side. Some studies show that the left side of our face reflects more emotion, and therefore is perceived as more pleasing. Practice your poses in front of a mirror or take a bunch of selfies using burst mode while you move.

Once you find your perfect angle, tilt your head towards your best side... it will enhance the natural angles of your face and make you look more approachable.

If you’re being photographed in full-frame, instead of facing straight towards the camera, twist your body to one side... your best side. Your body will look instantly slimmer with this pose because it accentuates your natural curves.

Balance It Out

Leaning on an object can help you look more relaxed and natural in your photos. You could lean on a table, chair, tree or even another person. Be careful not to lean too far or you’ll end up looking like you’re about to fall over!

One of my best tips is to try not to stand with equal weight on both legs, Instead, lean slightly and send the weight to one foot. When you do this, the other leg is free to bend and look more relaxed. You can accentuate the effect by crossing the leg in front or behind the other one. You can also achieve this effect by walking and having the photos taken in burst mode to capture the perfect frame.

Up Close and Personal

Getting close to the camera can help you fill the frame and avoid unwanted background distractions. If you're taking a selfie, try holding the camera close to your face.

Worried about a double chin? Try bringing your ears forward... it will elongate your neck and remove that unwanted chin poof.

Negative is Good!

To create negative space next to your waist, simply move your arms away from your sides. This will make your waist look smaller.

The “hand on hip” trick helps accentuate your waist and gives you something to do with your hands. Just be careful not to do it too much, or you'll look like a superhero!

Prop It Up!

Props can give life to your photos and provide you with something to do with your hands if you're feeling awkward. If you're taking a selfie, try holding a cute animal or interesting object.

See the Light

Lighting can make or break a photo, so learn how to use it to your advantage. Always turn your face at least partially toward the light so it is illuminated. Natural light is the best, so try to take your photos outdoors or near a window. If you're using a flash, make sure it's not pointing directly at the camera, or you'll end up with a washed-out photo.

And there you have it—your ultimate guide to rocking any photo session like the superstar you are! Remember, the best poses come from being comfortable in your own skin, so don’t overthink it. Let loose, have fun, and trust that you’re bringing all the right vibes.

Whether you’re striking a power pose, laughing your heart out, or showing off that smize, the camera loves it when you’re being unapologetically you. So, next time you’re in front of the lens, channel your inner diva, bring the energy, and most importantly—just enjoy the moment!
